Hardy Richardson has bypassed the pretentiousness and the restrictive conventions of artists who have studied in colleges and art schools. There is no imitation in his work. The great-grandson and nephew of William and Ellsworth Woodward, Louisiana's leading regional artists who started the Newcomb Art School and Tulane's School of Architecture, Hard has established a style of painting that is uniquely his. Using spray paint and Q-tips, the paintings of Hard Richardson bare the stamp of originality. Whether or not "Hard Art" impacts the national art Scene as the Woodwards did, the artist derives true enjoyment from painting. Wearing only Hard's bold signiture, the nude women in his collection are colorful, erotic and fun. Flat, two-dimentional figures float on the canvas as in a stylization reminiscent of primitive paintings. Hard says, "I love women. I love painting them. I like bright colors. Hot pink, bright lips, sensuous hips- these make exciting shapes. The form of the female body appeals to me. The paintings are so bizarre, they are amusing."
